Why we love it

The Jul² is an assisted-braking belay device built around Edelrid's optimised Mega Jul geometry, delivering high braking performance for single-rope climbing. In the event of a leader fall, the device's geometry works with the belay carabiner to block the rope, so holding a fall is far less dependent on hand strength than with a standard tube – offering greater safety reserves while still giving a soft, dynamic catch. Paying out slack is quick and fluid: the thumb on the brake hand supports the nose to hold the device open. Made from abrasion-resistant stainless steel with no moving parts, it's durable, forgiving, and easy to learn on – an excellent choice for gym and sport climbing. As with any assisted-braking tuber, the brake hand must remain on the brake rope at all times, and it should be paired with a symmetrical HMS carabiner.
